Richard Baxter in prison composing Ye Holy Angels Bright
Detail of the Worcester Cathedral Millennium window
Engraved and etched glass, 300x300cm, 2000
Over the last ten years I have been commissioned to undertake a range of large and smaller scale ecclesiastical projects in a variety of mediums. The process of working with an ecclesiastical body, whether the Methodist, Anglican or Catholic Church, tends to be a protracted process involving various committees and bodies. Whilst the timescale can be lengthy the finished work is enduring and public. The essential criteria for ecclesiastical commissions differ from my studio practice in the necessary fulfilment of the brief, which must include the following areas:

• the relationship of the new artwork to the architecture and pre-existing artefacts.
• choice of materials and scale of the new artwork.
liturgical function and theological reading of the artwork (congregational input).
• language/accessibility of artwork, stylistic mode i.e. abstract, decorative, all ages.
• ownership, the wider uses of the artwork for schools, teaching, tourism, history.

Currently I sit on the Anglican Synod’s Council for the Care of Churches, and the Roman Catholic Westminster Diocese’s Art and Liturgy Commission as an advisor on fine art in ecclesiastical buildings.

My ecclesiastical commissions are listed below. Current commissions are detailed on my news page.
